The lovely people at BOXD have very kindly sent me some of their vegan wellness shakes to review. I haven’t been paid for this review and it contains only my 100% honest personal opinions.

BOXD vegan shakes in glasses

If you’re looking for a good vegan protein powder or meal replacement shake, then I highly recommend that you try BOXD. Read on for my experience.

What are BOXD shakes?

BOXD wellness shakes are protein shakes with added nutrients. Perfect for women on the go, the powder comes in a pocket-sized paper sachet that you simply add to water and drink.

There are two flavours – Madagascan Vanilla and Double Chocolate Brownie.

The nutrients in BOXD shakes

Protein

Each BOXD shake contains as much protein as a standard protein shake (or a tin of baked beans).

The protein in BOXD shakes comes from peas and hemp. While some protein shakes contain only a single source of protein (pea, hemp, soy or rice), a blend of different plant proteins is best because you’ll get the benefits of all of the different amino acids.

Flaxseed

Another key ingredient that you won’t typically find in protein shakes is flaxseed. These superfood seeds are loaded with nutrients such as omega 3 fats (for heart health), lignans (to protect against cancers) and fibre (to aid digestion).

Vitamins

Each BOXD shakes all of the essential vitamins and minerals that women’s bodies need to function. Of special importance are the nutrients that vegans are often lacking in, such as vitamin b12, iron, calcium and vitamin D.

If you have a BOXD shake every day, it will negate the need for an additional women’s multivitamin.

Each BOXD shake contains:

  • Protein (21g)
  • Flaxseed (2000mg)
  • Iron (100% of RDI)
  • B Vitamin Complex (100% of RDI)
  • Vitamin C (100% of RDI)
  • Vitamin D3 (200% of RDI)
  • Potassium (25% of RDI)
  • Calcium (50% of RDI)
  • Magnesium (50% of RDI)
  • Zinc (50% of RDI)

BOX shakes have no GMO, no added sugar, no soy and are gluten-free. The cacao is Fairtrade and the sweeteners are plant-based.

Are these protein shakes or meal replacement shakes?

BOXD are something of a hybrid between protein shakes and meal replacement shakes. Each serving has 21g of protein as you would expect from a standard protein shake. However, the added nutrients are more akin to what you would expect from a vegan meal replacement shake.

The total calories per serving is 141 kcal, which isn’t substantial enough for a meal. Therefore, if you plan on using these shakes as a meal replacement, you should ensure that you’re also getting enough calories from other sources throughout the day.

How to make BOXD shakes

Mixing up a BOXD shake is super simple. You just add water (200 to 400 ml depending on your preference) and shake it in a protein shaker.

You can use a blender instead of a protein shaker if you prefer, but that’s really not necessary as BOXD shakes mix really easily so you will have no lumps or gritty bits.

I like to add a little ice as I like my drinks to be super cold. The recommended amount of water is 300ml, but I personally find that 250ml has the nicest taste and makes a thicker drink that’s a bit like a milkshake.

This is what 300ml of each shake looks like in pint glasses

What do BOXD shakes taste like?

I’ll level with you… I have never tried a vegan protein powder that I enjoyed the taste of… Until I tried BOXD!

I’ve spent many years wishing that I liked protein powder and tried lots of brands only to donate them to my husband as I couldn’t stand the taste. (He somehow downs protein in three seconds so the taste isn’t an issue for him).

I am SO HAPPY that I’ve finally found a vegan protein shake that I actually like!

Both the chocolate and the vanilla shakes are silky smooth with no funny smell or nasty aftertaste. The chocolate one is my favourite. It doesn’t taste of protein at all – just a sweet, rich, chocolatey treat.

The chocolate taste reminds me a little of Coco Pops, so it’s something I can enjoy for breakfast as well as before or after a workout.

BOXD packaging

Just like many other vegans, protecting our environment is of great importance to me and I hate that so many other protein powders come in plastic packaging.

BOXD protein powder comes in paper sachets inside a cardboard box. Everything is either recyclable or biodegradable. Even the ink used for printing is water-based! The boxes are made of 80% recycled materials, with the rest coming from sustainable sources.

As everyting is pre-measured, there’s no scooping or measuring. You can just pop a sachet in your handbag along with your protein shaker and mix it when you want to.

Good work, BOXD!

Little bonuses

In every BOXD delivery, you get some free samples from other companies. I received a little bottle of face oil and two sachets of skin serum.

This is a fun way to try products that you wouldn’t ever think to buy, for free.
