Reviews of Soulful Food Meals

I’ve tried lots of different Soulful microwave meals and found that some were better than others. Read on to discover what I thought…

Cajun Spiced Jackfruit Stew

Cajun Spiced Jackfruit Stew

This jackfruit stew One Pot meal is absolutely delicious and has a regular place on my shopping list. As it’s cooking, the smells remind me of my grandmother’s house when I was a child. So wholesome!

The jackfruit pieces add a real chewy, meaty texture to the stew. You can eat this on its own, but I like to dip a chunk of crusty bread into it for a hearty and filling meal.

Piri Piri Tofu Jambalaya

Piri Piri Tofu Jambalaya

This piri piri tofu jambalaya is just so flavoursome. It has so much going on with chewy tofu, sweetcorn, kidney beans, jalapenos, red peppers, toasted almonds and nigella seeds.

I’ll happily eat this either for lunch or as an evening meal. Every mouthful is delicious and it fills me up and leaves me feeling nourished with all of the wholesome ingredients.

North Indian Red Lentil Vegetable Dhal

North Indian Red Lentil Vegetable Dhal

Soulful’s vegetable dahl One Pot meal is very tasty. It’s slightly spicy, but not too much. As this is a little runny, it’s great to have something like rice or naan bread to soak up the flavours.

If you like Indian food and curries, then I’m sure you’ll love this easy vegan lunch or dinner option.

Thai Green Jackfruit Curry

Thai Green Jackfruit Curry

I had high hopes for Soulful’s That green jackfruit curry as I love Thai green curry and jackfruit is one of my favourite natural meat alternatives. However, I’ll admit that I wasn’t a huge fan of this dish.

I’d expected a Thai green curry to be watery, so I made some sticky rice. But actually, this meal was quite dry to be served with the side dish I added, oops. I found it to be a little heavy on the quinoa and light on the chilli. It certainly felt healthy, but it’s not one that I’ll order again.

West African Peanut & Chickpea With Red Rice

West African Peanut & Chickpea With Red Rice

Soulful’s peanut and chickpea curry is truly incredible! A peanut dish is not one that I would have picked but receiving this in my meal selection box has reminded me that it’s always good to keep trying the things that you think aren’t you’re favourites – I loved this meal.

Every mouthful was packed with flavour thanks to the sweet potato chunks, black turtle beans, spinach and creamy coconut milk. Yum!

How to Heat Soulful Meals

The easiest way to cook Soulful meals is in the microwave according to the instructions on the packaging. If you don’t have a microwave, you can cook Soulful One Pots in a pan on the hob and you can cook Plant Boxes in the oven.

How Does Soulful Food Delivery Work?

On the Soulful website, you can select individual One Pots, Super Soups or Plant Boxes. Or, for the best value, you can choose a Selection Box that has a mixture of One Pots and Plant Boxes. Choose from spicy, mild or best sellers.

If you spend £34.99 or more then delivery is free. It’s definitely worth spending this much on one order, as otherwise, the delivery costs £9.99.

Boxes are delivered on weekdays only. If you’re not in, the box can be left with a neighbour or outside. As it’s well-insulated, it will stay fresh until you get home and can put it in the fridge.

With the help of delivery specialists DPD, Soulful can deliver to most areas of the UK, but as the product is delivered chilled, some remote areas of the Scottish Highlands and Islands can’t be reached.

Are Soulful Food Meals Eco-Friendly?

Soulful meals can be considered eco-friendly. As Soulful is a certified B-Corp, the company has been assessed to ensure that it meets high standards of sustainability. Locally-sourced ingredients are used wherever possible. Most of the packaging is recyclable or reusable and Soulful delivered are carbon-neutral.

Packaging

Soulful meals come in recyclable plastic pots and recyclable plastic trays with cardboard sleeves. After use, you can rinse the pots or trays and place them with your normal household recycling, as long as your local authority allows (not all do).

The meals are packaged in a cardboard box and kept cool with insulation and ice packs. The insulation in my delivery was silver plastic and foil padding. There was nothing in the box to say that it was recyclable, but you can send it back to Soulful for them to reuse it if you print off a returns label.

On the Soulful website, it states that the insulation is made from either sheep’s wool or recycled denim. This new insulation is more eco-friendly than the old plastic version that was in my box, but if you’re a strict vegan who would have an issue with being sent packaging made from sheep’s wool then this will be a concern for you.

In that case, I’d recommend reaching out to the company to request that your box be packaged with denim rather than wool before you order. Or, buy the meals from a supermarket so that you can avoid the packaging.

Delivery

Soulful meals are delivered by DPD, so the delivery itself is carbon neutral. DPD does this by using new electric delivery vehicles where possible and double-deck load optimised trucks. Any remaining emissions are offset with various projects that produce wind energy, capture methane and produce energy and building materials from waste.

How Much Does Soulful Food Cost?

Most Soulful One Pots and Plant Boxes cost £2.99 if purchased individually online via the Soulful website or in your local Tesco or Co-Op supermarket. You can also get a selection of 12 meals which will provide lunches and dinners for the week for £34.99 with free delivery.

If you subscribe to a regular delivery then you’ll save 10% on each order. There’s no commitment and you can swap meals and change delivery dates as you wish.

You can save a further 20% when you use discount code CHOOSE20. This can bring the cost down to as little as £2.10 per meal.

Soulful is cheaper than most other vegan meal delivery services which generally cost anywhere from £4 to £7 per meal. Yet in my opinion, the quality is just as high, making these meals great value for money.

You can read my guide to the best vegan ready meals to see how Soulful compares to allplants, Planty, Mindful Chef and other plant-based ready meal delivery services in terms of price and quality.

Soulful meals are tasty, nutritious and so convenient as they can be delivered to your door and are ready in minutes. The meals are cheaper than many vegan meal deliveries, yet taste just as good.

The company is a certified B-Corp, so it cares for people and the planet. While Soulful meals are all plant-based, strict vegans should be aware that if you get a delivery, there’s a chance that the insulation may contain sheep’s wool.
